The display studio, which I share with my wife, is quite large and allows easy viewing of our work. The studio also houses a full size Columbian relief printing press that once belong to Blair Hughes - Stanton. A wide range of work is displayed to engage visitors of all ages.

Who I am

I retired from full time teaching in 2006. I had a managerial roll in art and design based in Wolverhampton Education Dept. I have always painted and exhibited but since retiring I have devoted all of my time to a wide range of art work.

I am a member of East West Artists, exhibiting work in both London and Japan.

I have shown work throughout the UK

I am a gallery artist with Bebb Fine Art, Ludlow

What I do

I draw on location in charcoal chalk and pastel then combine these in mixed media work. Later I develop these studies into acrylic paintings in the studio, which is large enough to accommodate canvases, which I make myself, up to six or seven feet.

I also have a large Columbia printing press, which allows me to develop further images as linocuts, collographs and other relief plates.

What inspires me

Frequent visits to the islands of the Outer Hebrides where scattered villages mingle with ancient sites in the moorland and adjacent mountains are the source of my work. Winding roads, rough tracks, sea pools, moorland,, hills, mountains and clusters of buildings old and new. At the core is a concern for the paint itself, It’s plasticity, variations of application in the form of scraffito, staccato , impasto and scumble all aiding the alchemic transformation of the image.

Why I do it

I have a need to clarify the emotions /sensations that engage me in the real world. Through my work I want to see what these look like. I want my work to go beyond the impression of a place, I am seeking a synthesis of experience and perception leading to an intense sense of connection

My work this year

This year I have completed a range of both large scale and smaller work in mixed media and acrylic. I am now beginning a series of prints that continue to explore moods and atmosphere through the emotive landscape of the Western Isles. I have exhibited at MOMA Wales, Tower House Gallery, Knighton , Knighton Fine Art and as gallery artist at Bebb Fine Art Ludlow.

Who I am

I have always produced and exhibited my artwork, but since retiring from teaching in 2006 I have devoted all my time to it.

I belong to the following professional bodies: Dundee Contemporary Arts print workshop; The Printmakers Council UK; East West Artists Group –exhibiting in London & Japan; I am also a gallery artist with Bebb Fine Art, Ludlow.

What I do

My starting point is always the live model, which I draw on a weekly basis. Natural forms are an integral part of my compositions. I have a large collection of natural forms and I use both drawing and photography to develop these images. I also draw and use watercolours on location to record natural forms. In my workshop which houses my printing presses I use a range of traditional and contemporary printing media, often combining more than one technique. I also have a major commitment to exhibiting my work

What inspires me

I have always been fascinated by the human form with its expressive articulation that often reveals inner emotions. To explore this further I have often drawn in both traditional and contemporary dance company workshops and employed professional dancers as models. In the wider natural world it is the mood evoking colours , movements and rhythms of life that engage me especially in water ,which is a recurring theme in my work.

Why I do it

Creating art has been a way of life for me since my early years. It has been a means of exploring my internal emotions and perceptions through encounters with the external world. Therefore the process is also a means of discovery.

My work this year

In The autumn of 2015 I was involved in a major 50th anniversary exhibition of printmaking by members of The Printmakers Council at The Bankside Gallery in London. As well as preparing new work for the exhibition this also included producing a Miniprint that has been accepted for the Victoria & Albert Museum, London print collection. A book of the current and founder members work, fully illustrated, is now available on Amazon.

I have also exhibited larger scale mixed media prints in Birmingham and Scotland.
